Awsworth

Awsworth once had a station on the Great Northern (later LNER) line from Nottingham to Derby which crossed the Erewash Valley to Ilkeston over the Bennerley Viaduct, closed in September 1964. At Awsworth Junction, a short distance to the east, a branch line curved away northwards to Pinxton. This line closed in January 1963. Near the junction it crossed a viaduct almost half a mile in length across the Giltbrook valley, known variously as Awsworth Viaduct, Giltbrook Viaduct, Kimberley Viaduct, but more commonly in the local area as the "Forty Bridges," though the actual combined number of arches and girder spans was 43. This viaduct is no more, but the Bennerley Viaduct is still in place.

Bennerley Viaduct

At Awsworth Junction the railway branched, one line passed over the Bennerley Viaduct as described, the other turned North towards Pinxton crossing the Giltbrook Viaduct (or Kimberley Viaduct but known locally as Forty Bridges). This viaduct was also designed by Richard Johnson and built of red bricks used to create 43 arched spans with a total length of 1716 feet and a height of 60 feet.[1]

Kimbolton Avenue, Nottingham

Lenton and its mills on the Leen get a mention in the Domesday Book in the late 11th century: In Lentune 4 sochmen and 4 bordars have two ploughs and a mill.

Lenton, Nottingham

The Marcus Garvey Ballroom is a local West Indian community centre managed by West Indian Cavaliers, and located on Lenton Boulevard. Named after Marcus Mosiah Garvey, this venue is famous for its large music hall, the Ballroom, which has a capacity of around 1000. Events include clubnights run by students from the universities, including Firefly, Detonate, Misst, and also specialises in live acts,it also houses the legendary C.P.H sound system.

Lenton Priory

The area was bought by William Stretton in 1802 and he built a large house called "The Priory". William was interested in antiquities and he is known to have removed old architectural materials whilst his house was being constructed. The funds for the house may well have come from the buildings that he and his father built in the Nottingham area. When William died he left the house to his son Sempronius. Colonel Sempronius Stretton died in 1842 and left the house to his brother Severus William Lynam Stretton. Neither of the sons regarded the Priory as home and Severus sold the house and it was bought by the Sisters of Nazareth in 1880.[3]
