The town has links with the John Leggott Sixth Form College in Scunthorpe, which enrolls many international students, North Lindsey College and Lincoln College,which has a branch situated Gainsborough College on Acland Street, which focuses on vocational education.
Newark's position as one of the few bridges on the River Trent in the area, its location along the Great North Road, (the A1), and later with the advance of rail transport being at the junction between the East Coast Main Line and the route from Nottingham to Lincoln, and situated on a man-made navigable section of the River Trent, have all enhanced its growth and development. "Newark became a substantial inland port, particularly for the wool trade,"[3] though it industrialised to some extent during the Victorian era, and later with an ironworks, engineering, brewing, and a sugar refinery. It was a major town standing for the Royalist cause during the Civil War, "Newark was besieged on three occasions and finally surrendered only when ordered to do so by the King after his own surrender."[4]
The canal is also regularly restocked with fish for anglers, and along the eastern tow path dozens of anglers are often seen.
International Superbike champion Ron Haslam hailed from Langley Mill. He won many titles in the 1970s and early 1980s on the international motorcycle scene, pitting his natural talents against major stars including Barry Sheene.
The village also has a Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady and St. Guthlac church, as well as two Baptist churches and a Methodist one. Along with St. Guthlac's church in Market Deeping, these churches comprise a local organisation of churches, the Churches Together in Deeping.
