Historically Nocton fell within the Langoe Wapentake area of Kesteven until the wapentakes were abolished by the Local Government Act of 1888.
The town also has two large GP practices, a nurse-lead community mental health team, providing long-term and short-term care and a PCT health centre; the latter being on Cecil Avenue.
Once a convent, Hinchingbrooke House is said to be haunted. The bridge over the Alconbury Brook named Nun's bridge[5] is said to be also haunted by one of the nuns who once lived at the old convent that is now Hinchingbrooke House. It's said she is often accompanied by another ghost which resembles the appearance of a nurse. The myth goes that the nun had a lover, a monk who caused them to be murdered. In 1965 a married couple reported seeing the ghosts on the bridge, and again when they returned home the same night.
The village itself occupies some 4,191 acres (1,696 ha) of land and is home to 309 residents (2001 census). It has a church dedicated to St Andrew, a shop, garage, post office and a pub The Three Horseshoes. It also has a school[1] the Abbots Ripton CofE Primary School which teaches 109 children (2006 census).[2] and it is home to the 18th century Abbots Ripton Hall which now has an estate totalling 5,700 acres (2,307 ha), larger than Abbots Ripton itself; its grounds contain some quite rare trees including ? quite unusual in England ? a good collection of elm trees which are injected every year to prevent Dutch elm disease.[3] Also based in the area is The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, a research centre in the land and freshwater environmental sciences.
Based around a now lost 12th century Benedictine Priory, destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries, there is a large parish church in the village which is the largest church in the Deepings. The stones from the priory were used to build various 17th century buildings in the area. The village also has an 18th century village lock-up. The manor was associated in the 17th.c. with the Wymondsold family of Welbeck Place, Putney, Surrey and East Lockinge, Berks.[2]
