Stanford-le-Hope

Often known locally simply as Stanford, the town is home to many working-class commuters working in London, thanks to its proximity to the capital and its c2c-operated London, Tilbury and Southend Railway rail connections. One of the main local industries is the nearby oil refinery at Shell Haven, and it soon will be home to the proposed DP World deep sea port, major business and logistics park. Many residents also travel along the nearby A13 to work in the Lakeside Shopping Centre.

Grays

Also Grays bus station at Grays railway station is a hub for most bus services in Thurrock and there is a coach service to Stansted airport. The bus services are operates by Ensignbus, First Essex and Clintona Minicoaches.

Upminster Windmill

The steam engine was located in a brick building built against the north-east side of the windmill, and drove two pairs of millstones, a centrifugal governor, and a sack hoist. The steam driven millstones were located on 2 levels and driven by a 2˝ inch (64mm) square shaft of 50 feet (15.24 m) length, those on the upper floor being driven by a cast iron bevel wheel with wooden cog inserts. It was also able to work various dressing machines in the windmill, but not the wind driven stones. There is some difference over the exact type of engine, it being variously described as a grasshopper engine built by Napiers[4], and a Cornish boiler by Davey Paxman & Co[2]. Both sources agree that the engine had formerly been used in a Thames steamboat. The steam engine itself was removed in 1940 and taken to South West Essex Technical College in Walthamstow, while the building and remaining contents were removed in 1960 with two of the millstones remaining at the windmill entrance[2].

Upminster station

Platforms 1a, 1 & 2 are served by c2c services. Platforms 3, 4 & 5 are served by the District Line, and platform 6 is served by National Express East Anglia services. The next station westbound on the District Line is Upminster Bridge.

Upminster Bridge tube station

The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway from Fenchurch Street and Barking was constructed through the Upminster Bridge area in 1885, with stations at Hornchurch and Upminster.[3] The Whitechapel and Bow Railway opened in 1902 and allowed through services of the Metropolitan District Railway to operate to Upminster. The Metropolitan District converted to electric trains in 1905 and services were cut back to East Ham. Delayed by World War I,[3] electrified tracks were extended by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway to Upminster and through services resumed in 1932.[4][5] The Metropolitan District Railway was incorporated into London Transport in 1933, and became known as the District line.
