In the 1940s, Billericay Urban District Council and Essex County Council, who were scared about the lack of amenities on the area and how it had evolved, petitioned the Government to create a New Town.[7] Basildon was one of eight 'New Towns' created in the South East of England after the passing of the New Towns Act.[8] On January 4, 1949, Lewis Silkin, Minister of Town and Country Planning, officially designated Basildon as a 'New Town'. Basildon Development Corporation was formed in February 1949 to transform the designated area into a modern new town. The New Town incorporated Laindon and Pitsea[8] and was laid out around small neighbourhoods with the first house being completed in June 1951.[7] The first tenants moved into homes in Redgrave Road in Vange.[9] In March 2010 Basildon paid homage to the infamous white Hollywood sign by creating their own version. At five feet tall, the new sign is one-tenth of the height of the Hollywood original. This is part of a rejuvenation plan to bring the town into the 21st Century and to attract more visitors.
Danson House is a Georgian mansion (today a Grade I listed building) at the centre of Danson Park, to the west of Bexleyheath in the London Borough of Bexley, south-east London.
Apart from the River Thames the other rivers within the Borough are the River Darent, which, with its tributary the River Cray and the smaller Stanham River, all form part of its north-eastern boundary; and the River Shuttle, a tributary of the Cray.
The Wrotham Transmitting Station is located on the North Downs, close to the village of Wrotham in Kent, England and just north of the M20 motorway. Its National Grid Reference is TQ595604. The current mast on the site was constructed in 1981, is 176.6 metres (579 feet) tall, and was built to replace the original mast of equal height that was constructed in 1951.
