Southwold Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Southwold, Suffolk, England. It was constructed by Trinity House from 1887 and was taken into service in 1890. It replaced three lighthouses which had been condemned due to serious coastal erosion. The lights it houses are white when seen from directly out to sea (for navigation) and red from the sides (as a warning). It has additional charm due to the fact that it is situated within an area of town houses.
Adnams PLC is a British regional brewery company founded in 1890 in Southwold, Suffolk, England, by George and Ernest Adnams. The earliest recorded brewing on the Adnams site was in 1396 by Johanna de Corby.[1] The company produces cask ale and pasteurised bottled beers. Annual production is around 85,000 barrels.
In 1659 a fire devastated most of the town[citation needed] and damaged St Edmunds Church, whose original structure dated from the 12th century. The fire created a number of open spaces within the town which were never rebuilt. Today these greens, and the restriction of expansion because of the surrounding marshes, have preserved its genteel appearance.
The civil parish has an area of 9.74 km2 and in the 2001 census had a population of 10,318 in 4,347 households. For the purposes of local government, the parish today falls within the district of Great Yarmouth. However prior to the Local Government Act 1972, the parish was within Lothingland Rural District in Suffolk.[2][3]
Its schools include: Hillside First School, Homefield First School, Lynn Grove High, and Woodlands Primary and Nursery School. The old Community Centre - originally the sole village school - is centrally located within the older part of the village and serves the local people as a location for youth activities and social clubs. In May 2007 the library, located in the community centre, reopened after being renovated and improved.
Historically, the parish of Sheringham comprised the two villages of Upper Sheringham, a farming community, and Lower Sheringham, which combined farming with fishing.
