The canal lies in Middlewich, Cheshire, UK, and connects the Trent and Mersey Canal to the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, terminating with a single lock known as Wardle Lock. It was built in 1829 so that the navigation authority of the Trent and Mersey Canal could maintain control over the junction.
Baron Delamere, the major local landowner sold most of his considerable property in the town in 1912, resisting the giving of the mace and title to the newly formed Winsford Urban District Council (possibly because he wanted to sell them). The mace was therefore taken back to Vale Royal Abbey and Sir William Verdin gave Winsford a new silver mace to mark the coronation of George V. In 1946 Baron Delamere's son, who had settled in Kenya, returned the old mace to Winsford when he sold the remaining family land.
Local services are limited, and include a church which is within Marthall, pub and several postboxes. Other services such as the primary school, post office and shop have closed down, due to many residents using services in Knutsford. Ollerton combined with the adjacent village of Marthall, has a joint parish council, elected every 3 years, though having very limited and symbolic powers. The villages share the new village hall in Marthall, which was constructed in November 2009.
A campaign was set up by the Knutsford Guardian in 2007 for a later train from Manchester Piccadilly to Knutsford on Friday and Saturday evenings than the current last train which leaves Manchester Piccadilly at 23:17.[9] The 00.38 Manchester Piccadilly to Chester train currently runs non-stop through Knutsford (and all other stations on the Mid Cheshire line), thus a stop at Knutsford (and Northwhich) could be facilitated relatively easily.
Current bus operators in Knutsford are , Chapel-en-le-Frith based Bowers, Oldham based Swans Travel and Winsford based Tomlinson Travel and Wrexham based Vale Travel.
