Tintagel Castle

The high incidence of imported pottery from the 7th century found at Tintagel Castle suggest this was an area of high significance, where war bands from the region may have congregated.[1] After the Romans left Britain, Brythonic peoples probably occupied the site. It has been speculated[by whom?]that it was a summer residence for the rulers of one of the kingdoms of Dumnonia and may have been associated with lands in Brittany which was also populated with Brythonic speaking populations. The Ravenna Cosmography, of around AD 700, makes reference to Purocoronavis, (almost certainly a corruption of Durocornovium), 'a fort or walled settlement of the Cornovii, (unidentified, but possibly referring to Tintagel Castle or Carn Brea castle). Later legends claimed that this was the site where the Cornish kings held court at this time. Tintagel has been proven to have been a highly important high-status ('royal stronghold') settlement between AD 400 and 700. It may have been in seasonal and ceremonial use only, but more high class imported Mediterranean pottery has been found there than at all the other contemporary southern British sites put together. Legend connects kings such as Marc Cunomorus with Tintagel and the royal use of the site would actually support theories of the legend of Arthur being conceived at Tintagel.[2]

Tintagel

Tintagel Primary School was built at Treven in 1914 to replace the old church school and has been extended since. Those who go on to a comprehensive school will be at Sir James Smith's School, Camelford.[20] The Gift House was purchased by the Trustees of Tintagel Women's Institute in 1923 from Catherine Johns and not donated as previously thought.[citation needed] It adjoins the Old Post Office.

Holsworthy

Holsworthy is a historic market town with hundreds of years of history and is mentioned in the Domesday Book, as being part of the estate of Harold Godwinson. The town has occupied a hill top site since Saxon times, and in 1154 became a safe trading centre (known as a port town). The date of the original charter for the Market and Charter fair is between 1154 and 1185.

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery

The Museum has collections of fine and decorative arts, natural history and human history. The museum's natural history collection consists of over 150,000 specimens and an historic natural history library and archive. Many prehistoric artefacts from Dartmoor, important Bronze Age and Iron Age material from Mount Batten and medieval and post-medieval finds from Plymouth are found in the human history collection alongside artifacts from Ancient Egypt and other ancient cultures of Europe and the Middle East.
