Places of interest in Ledbury, HR8
Ledbury is an ancient borough, dating back to the Domesday Book, where it was recorded as Liedeberge, and returned members to Parliament in the reign of Edward I. Ledbury probably takes its name from the River Leadon, on which it stands. The Old English berg (hill) has been added to the river name.
In 1863 the Revd Edward Walker proposed the enlargement or replacement of St Mary's. Thirty-four plans were submitted, but because of opposition the proposal was abandoned and instead between 1875 and 1877 the church was restored and equipped with gas lighting and a new heating system.
1806 saw the opening of the Baths built by Henry Thompson. It boasted 14 warm baths, fitted with marble and Dutch tile, one large cold bath plus smaller ones and a boiler capable of heating up to 190°F.
The site chosen was part of Imperial Square. The building was designed by Gloucester architect Frederick William Waller and built by the Cheltenham firm of Collins and Godfrey. The total cost of the building, including internal decoration, fixtures and fittings, was around £45,000. It was formally opened on 5 December 1903 by Sir Michael Hicks Beach MP, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer, whose family had long-standing connections with Cheltenham.
Wolverhampton (pronounced /ˌwʊlvərˈhæmptən/) is a city and metropolitan borough of the West Midlands, England. In 2004, the local government district had an estimated population of 239,100; the wider Urban Area had a population of 251,462, which makes it the 13th most populous city in England.
Historically a part of Staffordshire, and forming part of the metropolitan county of the West Midlands from 1974, the city is commonly recognised as being named after Lady Wulfruna, who founded the town in 985: its name coming from Anglo-Saxon Wulfrūnehēantūn = \"Wulfrūn\'s high or principal enclosure or farm\". Alternatively, the city may have earned its original name from Wulfereēantūn = \"Wulfhere\'s high or principal enclosure or farm\" after the Mercian King. Nevertheless, the name Wulfruna is commonly used in the city - for example, for the Wulfrun Centre or for Wulfrun Hall.
