Rochester, Kent

The Romano-British name for Rochester was Durobrivae. This is commonly translated as 'stronghold by the bridge' or 'stronghold by the bridges'.[2] This could have been a Belgic Settlement or oppidum, but there was no bridge in AD 43.[3] It was also known as Durobrovum and Durobrivis, which could be a Latinisation of the British word 'Dourbruf' meaning swiftstream.[4]

Strood railway station

The typical off-peak service from the station is:

Rochester Castle

King John died on 19 October 1216, so it fell to Henry III to repair the castle. He spent over a £1000 on rebuilding, with new stables and gateways, and a further ditch to strengthen the defences. A new chapel was built next to the Royal apartments in the bailey. The most notable surviving feature is the new south-east tower of the keep, which was rebuilt according to the latest defensive design and is three-quarters round to better deflect missile attack and work against attempts at undermining (see image left, right-most corner of the keep). From inside the castle the line of the new tower and old walls is clearly viisble, and probably most remarkable where the ornate arch in the castellans chamber, most likely the apse of a private chapel, meets a much more cheaper, perfunctory arch in the new section.

Stanford-le-Hope

Stanford-le-Hope is bordered to the north by the A13 road and to the south by the Thames Estuary. It is located 12.7 miles (20.5 km) west of Southend-on-Sea.

Maidstone

The two railway routes, in spite of the fact that Maidstone is the county town, are not principal ones, due to an accident of history. There are two principal stations: Maidstone East, the more northerly of the two, connects with London and Ashford; whilst Maidstone West is on the Medway Valley Line.
