The mound retains the title of Castle Hill and is surmounted by a 19th century folly, with a castellated roofline. This was built in 1846 by a local landowner, Joseph Almond Cropper, comprising almshouses for the poor.
The village boasted a thriving social life in its public houses - especially at weekends - until the end of the 20th century. A particularly memorable event was New Years's Eve (or 'Hogmonay') - the spirit of the occasion greatly enhanced by residents of Scottish origin - when (at shortly before midnight) the pubs on the village green emptied for a few minutes as hundreds of people converged in a huge circle on The Green to sing 'Auld Lang Syne' around the kilted figure of piper, Sam Jardine.
Darlaston railway station was a station built on the South Staffordshire Line in 1863. It served the town of Darlaston, and was located to the east of the town centre, on Walsall Road. It was one of two railway stations that served the town. The other, Darlaston James Bridge, was located on the Walsall to Wolverhampton Line and became known as Darlaston after the closure of this station.
The next stops after the Black Lake tunnel northbound was Wednesbury and Southbound was Swan Village, West Bromwich Central.
Tame Valley Junction (grid reference SO976936), also known as Doe Bank Junction, is the western limit of the Tame Valley Canal where it meets the Walsall Canal, south of Walsall, in the West Midlands, England.
