The first meeting of Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society (MSAS) took place in 1969 and early meetings took place at the premises of a local engineering company. The founding members quickly formed a plan to build an Observatory and by 1972 a piece of land had been purchased at one of the highest points in Nottinghamshire. Site preparation commenced and the foundations were poured in 1975. All building work was done by members with the majority of materials being reclaimed from local demolition sites.

In the 1960s a new grandstand was purchased, for the west side, from Hurst Park Racecourse in Surrey. The cost was £30,000, however the final amount spent was considerably more than this once the cost of transportation and reconstruction had been taken into account. The stand was first used in 1966 but it was not fully completed until 1971.
Langley Mill is a small town in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, England. It is very close to the border with Nottinghamshire, and runs into the towns of Aldercar (to the north) and Heanor (to the south). Across the River Erewash is the Nottinghamshire town of Eastwood. It is part of the Aldercar and Langley Mill parish. Although the town has an "NG" postcode, either Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire can be used in its postal address, however it is firmly part of Derbyshire. (The boundary used to be the River Erewash, but the canal basin moved from Nottinghamshire to Derbyshire a few years ago, and the A610 is the new boundary.)
However, these factories only block the western bank of the canal, and on the eastern bank, between the Erewash flood plain and the railway lines, there is an active community cycle path, which follows the course of the canal to Ripley.
