Ellesmere Castle was in the town of Ellesmere, Shropshire. (grid reference SJ403347).
It is an ancient village that, before the coming of the North Wales Mineral Railway, was more important than Rossett itself[citation needed]. The village dates back to Saxon[citation needed] times and was settled by Angles from the Kingdom of Mercia. Today the village is little more than a backwater on the old road between Rossett and Caergwrle.
Following the Main Road over the Chester ? Shrewsbury railway, the main commercial centre of the village can be seen. Although clearly located in Rhosrobin, the Rhosddu Industrial Estate takes its name from the old colliery that once occupied this whole area. The colliery was opened in the 1860s by The Wrexham Coal Company and at its peak employed almost 1000 men. The colliery closed in 1924. The only surviving building can be seen at the rear of the estate ? the old wheelhouse is currently occupied by a pallets business.
Henry Dennis and his son, Henry Dyke Dennis, began sinking a coal mine near Gresford in 1888,[4] taking four years for the two mile deep shafts to be completed. The first coal was produced from June, 1911, with full production reached before the outbreak of World War I. The coal was renowned in the area as being of very good quality and hot burning.
The latest addition to the ground was achieved in 1999 after Grant Aid from Sport Lot, the Welsh Development Agency and the Football Trust together with generous local sponsorship allowed for the construction of a new stand on the Mold Road side of the ground. The impressive new structure was originally named the Pryce Griffiths Stand after the then chairman (but since renamed the Mold Road Stand after the then chairman sold the club to Alex Hamilton) has a capacity of 3,500 and also contains hospitality and conferencing facilities.
