On the doorstep is the world famous[citation needed] Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, which has its origins in a convalescent home for disabled children established in 1900 at Baschurch by Agnes (later Dame Agnes) Hunt. In 1919 funds and premises became available and the hospital transferred to Park Hall into the hospital section of a former army camp. Much progress has been made since that time both with vast new buildings and pioneer medical treatments. The hospital, through the quality of service and care offered by a dedicated[citation needed] team of staff, is a centre of excellence with an international reputation.[citation needed]
Although Old Oswestry was one of the most strongly defended hill forts in Britain there is no evidence that the Roman Legions ever tried to besiege it.
The site was compulsorily purchased in 2005 by Oswestry Borough Council to ensure it could be managed for wildlife and the quiet recreation of Oswestry residents and visitors alike. Shelf Bank was not left to the children of Oswestry,[citation needed] it was only through the intervention of Shropshire County Council staff that the previous owner of the site was finally found and the land purchased for the people of Oswestry.
Unfortunately, the great plans for Vale Royal Abbey, upon which the early prosperity of Over depended, came to an end when first the great castle-building programme of Edward I stripped it of funding and then the Black Death killed half of the population.
Ormskirk lies on sloping ground on the side of a ridge, whose highest point is 68 metres (223 ft) above sea-level, at the centre of the West Lancashire Plain,[1] and has been described as a "planned borough", laid out in the 13th century.[2]
