Until 1966 the station was also used by trains on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway line which crossed the main line on the level at the north end of the platforms.
Speedway was introduced in 2000. The team were founded by promoter Andy Hewlett and named the Somerset Rebels, entering the Conference League.[2] Hewlett had been searching for a venue in Somerset to host speedway for some time, when he was offered the site by a local farmer who had hosted banger meetings (cars) there a couple of times.
Ellenborough Park supports two Red Data Book plants, Branched Horsetail Equisetum ramosissimum and Smooth Rupturewort Herniaria glabra. Branched Horsetail is only found in one other locality in Great Britain, in Lincolnshire. Smooth Rupturewort is found in eight other localities in Britain, all in East Anglia.
Weston's oldest structure is Worlebury Camp, on Worlebury Hill, dating from the Iron Age.[7][8] The medieval church of St John has been rebuilt,[9] but its preaching cross survives. The former rectory is an early 19th century structure with later additions. Though it remains adjacent to the church it has not been a parsonage house since the end of the 19th century. Today it is known as Glebe House and is divided into flats.[10]
Additional services superimposed on these local trains include through services to London Paddington, while CrossCountry operate a three services from Paignton to Manchester Piccadilly, and two services from Manchester Piccadilly to Paignton. This links Weston-super-Mare with towns such as Birmingham, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Macclesfield and Stockport without needing to change trains at Bristol Temple Meads.
