Chichester

The higher and further educational institutions include the Chichester High Schools Sixth Form, which is the largest Sixth Form in West Sussex. It offers a range of A-Level and vocational courses with full use of a wide-range of facilities at both Boys & Girls High Schools. Chichester College, formerly Chichester College of Arts, Science and Technology; offers both foundation-level and degree-equivalent courses, mainly focused towards vocational qualifications for industry. The College has recently made significant investment in upgrading facilities, and is now offering a wider range of subject areas in its prospectus.

Chichester Castle

Although originally built by the Earl of Shrewsbury, the Earls of Sussex owned the castle in the period 1154?1176, after which it passed into possession of the Crown.[1] Early in the 13th century, Chichester Castle was used as a court and jail. Chichester and Oxford Castle were some of the earliest urban castles to be used for this purpose, but gradually most urban castles were also used in this way.[4] In 1216, the castle, along with many others in southern England, such as Reigate Castle, was captured by the French. This was part of the First Barons' War against King John of England (1199?1216). The castle was recaptured by the English in the spring of 1217.[3] In the same year, Henry III ordered the castle's destruction.[1] Between 1222 and 1269, Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall, gave the site to the order of Greyfriars for them use as the site of a friary. The remains of the motte are still visible today in Priory Park;[3] the motte is protected as a Scheduled Monument.[1][5]

Chichester railway station

In addition to the standard off-peak services, there are occasional trains to the West Country operated by First Great Western.

Selhurst Park

The ground also holds the English football record for staging the game seen by the greatest amount of people. This was for the club debut of the first Chinese footballers to play in English football, Sun Jihai and Fan Zhiyi in 1998.[11] Most of that audience was recorded to be watching on television in China.

Croydon transmitting station

The Croydon Transmitter was originally used to broadcast the London ITV signal on VHF Band III. When UHF broadcasting began the nearby Crystal Palace Transmitter was used. VHF television was discontinued in 1985, and the Croydon Transmitter was not used again for regular TV broadcasting until 1997, when a new directional UHF antenna, designed to avoid interference with continental transmitters, was installed to carry the newly-launched Five in the London area. It still carries Five's analogue signal, although its digital terrestrial service uses Crystal Palace. Croydon also has reserve transmitters for BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and Channel 4, but these are only used in the event of engineering works or a failure at Crystal Palace.
