The boundaries of the civil parish were identical to the ancient parish, and it covered 3,289 acres (13.3 km2). The populations recorded in National Censuses were:
A document in Hackney library records a game of cricket to have been played on the park[3] as early as 1802, and the cricket strip on London Fields still hosts competitive games throughout the summer (late April ? mid September). Several teams from the North East London Cricket League regard the park as their home pitch, most notably London Fields CC, based from the Pub on the Park. During the summer the park can be extremely busy with many people combining an afternoon's picnic with watching the cricket. The Turley End of the ground is a popular vantage point for those watching the cricket.
The parish church of Hackney became a sinecure rectory in 1275. This meant there was both a vicar and a rector for the parish, both positions were in the gift of the Bishop of London, and the parish served the entire area of the current London Borough until the parish was divided in the 18th century. Many of the position holders were absentee pluralists (they had other jobs, and Hackney just formed a part of their income). From the 14th century to the 17th century the church was dedicated to St Augustine. But from about 1660, the church was dedicated to St John of Jerusalem, St John the Baptist, and known as St John at Hackney, representing the links of the parish with the Order of St John of Jerusalem.[1]
