No bus route serves the station directly, but London Buses route 326 goes very near (1 minute's walk). This has encouraged use of the station, which was formerly under-used. Bus routes 82, 125, 221 and 460 stop about 10 minutes' walk from West Finchley Station.
Finchley was created an urban district of Middlesex in 1894. In 1932 it was created as the Municipal Borough of Finchley, but in 1965 the municipal borough was abolished and its area became part of the London Borough of Barnet.
London Buses route 383 to/from Barnet (the Spires) terminates at and departs from the main station entrance on Woodside Park road. This is relatively recent; until about the year 2000 no bus routes served the station. Further buses serve North Finchley High Road, which is a 5-10 minute walk east from the station along Woodside Park road.
The station building has been retained and restored and it now forms part of the Alban Way, a 6½ mile long cycletrack running from St Albans to Hatfield.
Salvation Army Halt railway station was initially a private non-timetabled halt for the staff of Messrs Sander & Sons which had established an orchid-growing business in the Camp district of St Albans. A private siding (known as "Sander's Sidings") also led directly to the firm's greenhouses, enabling the swift dispatch of orchids to the market. The halt was also used by Salvation Army personnel working at the Army's printing works on Campfield Road, and it was from this that the halt obtained its name.[1][2]
