In 1801, the civil parishes that form the modern borough had a total population of 6,404; and the area was characterised by farming and woodland ? with settlement principally around the Great North Road. The population rose dramatically with the arrival of the trams and railways in the middle of 19th century, and new estates were built to house commuters.
