Moving to a New Environment - Tips to Help Kids Adjust
Published on Tuesday, 03 May 2011 Children have varying reactions to relocation. While some may feel enthusiastic about it, others may feel anxious about the new environment. There are also some kids who may feel mad because they do not approve of your decision to move. As a parent, you need to help children adjust to their new environment, even if you are having a hard time yourself. It is your job to make them feel comfortable in the new neighborhood. Here are a few steps you could take to help children accept and be at ease with the change. 1. Bring along familiar things Your priority is to make children as comfortable as possible. Let them design their own bedroom and bring along their favorite toys. If you surround them with familiar stuff, they will not feel strange in your new home. 2. Take a tour in your new neighborhood Commute or drive around your new place to be familiar with it. This allows children to get to know the routes on the way to school and back home. As you go around, you may even discover parks, ice cream parlors and beaches which you can go to as a family. 3. Help them make new friends If your child likes to swim, sign him up for a swimming lesson or encourage him to join community activities. This is one of the fastest ways to gain new friends in a new neighborhood. If they meet new friends at school, encourage them invite their friends home. 4. Allow them to keep in touch with their friends Tell them it is okay to call old friends once in awhile. They might want to share new experiences with old friends. This also helps desensitize them from missing their old friends.
