Places of interest in Newton Aycliffe, DL5
The station lies on the route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first passenger railway. The station's historical claim to fame is that the first train on that line, the Locomotion No. 1, was assembled here in 1825 before starting on its first journey.
Although the station is on the route of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway, it is a relatively recent addition to it, having opened in 1978.
The town is home to the football team Darlington F.C., known as The Quakers because of the contributions made to the town by men such as Edward and Joseph Pease, members of the Religious Society of Friends. The town's football club play at an impressive 25,000-seat stadium that opened on Neasham Road in 2003 after 120 years at the Feethams, but endured the disappointment of relegation from The Football League in 2010 ? 21 years after they suffered a similar fate, and were promoted back from the Football Conference at the first attempt.
It is one of three schools or colleges that offer A levels in Darlington LEA, getting the best results in the LEA, and the second best excluding private in North East England after Cleveland College of Art and Design.
