Today the ruins are open to the public.
The local state school ? King Edward VI High School (Granted a grammar school charter in 1552 by King Edward VI)[14] gained Beacon and Leading Edge status in 2003 and 2004 respectively. There are also two middle schools within Morpeth built next to each other called Newminster and Chantry. A first school called Abbeyfields is located within Kirkhill, Goosehill First School is nearer the town centre and Morpeth All Saints Church of England aided first school is located in Lancaster Park, to the north of the town. Children of Roman Catholic families in Morpeth normally attend St. Robert?s R.C. First School within Morpeth before moving on to St. Benet Biscop Catholic High School in the nearby town of Bedlington.

The name Ashington possibly originates from Essdene which has been referenced since 1170, but may instead have originated from Ã?sc, a Saxon invader who sailed from Northern Germany to the River Wansbeck and settled in the deep wooded valley near Sheepwash. But it could also have come from "Valley of Ash Trees" - these would have lined the valley and the Saxon word Dene means valley giving the name 'Ash Dene'.[1] In the 1700s all that existed of Ashington was a small farm with a few dwellings around.
