Newcastle-upon-Tyne 10 miles
After the Scotswood, Newburn and Wylam Railway Line was closed the trackwork was removed and the trackbed later converted into a cyclepath. That cyclepath forms part of National Cycle Network Route 72 and starts at Tyne Riverside Country Park at Low Prudhoe. After Wylam it keeps to the north side of the River Tyne, linking Wylam with Newcastle upon Tyne and the coast at Tynemouth. There is another cyclepath on the south side of the river which starts in the car park at Wylam railway station and links Wylam to Gateshead and the coast at South Shields.
The parish church of St Mary is another fine example of a church with a tall slender Anglo Saxon tower. There are fragments of a Saxon Cross in the church, which was much enlarged in the thirteenth century ? wider, loftier and with long lancet windows. The nave with aisles is two bays only in length since the north and south Transepts each with west aisles take up the space of two more bays. There is a long useless chancel with very little ornament. The churchyard has an interesting collection of gravestones in memory of village worthies.[1] In the porch is a stone slab commemorating Thomas Bewick who is buried in the churchyard.
