The canal lies in Middlewich, Cheshire, UK, and connects the Trent and Mersey Canal to the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, terminating with a single lock known as Wardle Lock. It was built in 1829 so that the navigation authority of the Trent and Mersey Canal could maintain control over the junction.
Knutsford was recorded in the William the Conqueror's Domesday Book of 1086 as Cunetesford ("Canute's ford"). King Canute (KnĂștr in Old Norse) was the king of England (1016?1035) and later king of Denmark, Norway and parts of Sweden as well. Local tradition says that King Canute forded the River Lily, which was said to be dangerous then, though other reports say it was the Birkin Brook at or near Booth Mill.[1] The English Place-Name Society gives the name as being derived from the Old English for Knutr's ford or possibly hillock ford.[2]
Monday to Saturday, there is an hourly service to Manchester Piccadilly, Chester, Stockport, Altrincham and Northwich, with extra trains to/from Stockport at peak times on weekdays. There is a 2-hourly service on Sundays to Chester, Manchester Piccadilly and Southport.
Ollerton is a village in the Borough of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south east of the town of Knutsford, and has a population of 323.[1]
The M56 (junctions 7 & 9) and M6 (Junction 20) motorways are both within 3 miles of Lymm.[11] The conjunction of these motorways is known as the Lymm Interchange, and hosts a service station known as the Poplar 2000 services, a well used truck stop. Which has a McDonald's on site, that is managed by Simon Gould. The A56 also passes just south of the village, connecting the nearby towns of Warrington and Altrincham.[12] Buses to Lymm from Warrington and Altrincham are frequent during the weekday and on Saturdays [13][14]
