The Kendal dialect known as Kendalian, is a variant of the Cumbrian dialect spoken around the Kendal area.

Windermere

Windermere is a ribbon lake. (Ribbon lakes are long, narrow and finger-like.) It was formed 13,000 years ago during the last major ice age by two glaciers, one from the Troutbeck valley and the other from the Fairfield horseshoe[citation needed]. When the glaciers melted the lake filled with the meltwater, which was held in by moraine (rock material) deposited by the glacier.

Windermere, Cumbria

Windermere was from 1894 to 1974 governed by an urban district council which in 1905 absorbed the former Bowness-on-Windermere UDC although Bowness remained a separate civil parish until 1974. Windermere UDC had slight boundary changes in 1934 and was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 replacing it with South Lakeland District Council. The Windermere coat of arms was commissioned in 1968 and designed by local schoolgirl, Sheila West.

Belle Isle (Windermere)

In 1996, Belle Isle House suffered serious damage following a large fire. However, it was repaired and is once again a place of residence.[4]
