Cockermouth

Cockermouth owes its existence to the confluence of the rivers Cocker and Derwent, being the lowest point, historically, at which the resultant fast flowing river powered by the Lake District could be bridged.[3] Cockermouth is situated a few minutes travelling distance from lakes such as Ennerdale, Crummock Water, Loweswater, and Bassenthwaite.

Cockermouth Castle

The first castle on this site was built by the Normans in 1134. Significant additions were made in the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle played a significant role in the Wars of the Roses, and in the Civil War, when it was badly damaged. Although it was partly restored in the 19th century much of it is still in ruins. It is a grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Cockermouth Castle is currently (2007) owned by Pamela Lady Egremont.

Bridekirk

Incorporated in the new construction are two Norman doorways. The church is famous for its 12th century casket-shaped font carved with inscriptions, birds, beasts and the baptism of Christ. It is signed by a 'Richard', believed to be the work of a famous carver from Durham. Old tombstones stand guard around the church walls. There are patterned tiles inside the church.

Poulton-le-Fylde

At the 2001 UK census, the urban area of Poulton-le-Fylde had a population of 18,264.[57] The 2001 population density for Wyre was 3.74 per hectare, with a 100 to 90.7 female-to-male ratio.[58] The proportion of residents who classified themselves as White was 98.9%, a figure higher than the average for the North West (94.4%) and England (90.9%).[56] Those classifying themselves as belonging to ethnic minorities were correspondingly lower than the regional and national averages. Of those over 16 years old, 22.5% were single (never married), 46.0% married and 8.49% divorced.[59] Although the proportion of divorced people was similar to that of the North West and England, the rates of those who were married were higher than the regional and national averages (North West: 42.8%; England: 43.5%). The rates of those in Wyre who were single were significantly lower than the national and regional averages (North West: 30.1%; England: 30.2%).[59]

Derwent Park

The stadium was opened in 1956. The record attendance at Derwent Park was set in 1965 when 17,741 spectators turned up for a third round Challenge Cup match against Wigan. Floodlights were installed in 1990 and were first used for a Cumbria versus Australia match on the 1990 Kangaroo Tour and also hosted the opening game of the 1994 Kangaroo Tour between Cumbria and Australia. Derwent Park staged the New Zealand Māori versus Samoa game in the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.
