Kendal Castle

Kendal Castle, April 2007

Kendal

Historically a part of Westmorland, Kendal today is known largely as a centre for tourism, as the home of Kendal mint cake, and as a producer of pipe tobacco and tobacco snuff. Its buildings, mostly constructed with the local grey limestone, have earned it the nickname the Auld Grey Town.

Belle Isle (Windermere)

In 1996, Belle Isle House suffered serious damage following a large fire. However, it was repaired and is once again a place of residence.[4]

Windermere

There is debate as to whether the stretch of water between Newby Bridge and Lakeside at the southern end of the lake should be considered part of Windermere, or a navigable stretch of the River Leven. This affects the stated length of the lake, which is 11 mi 420yd (18.08 km) long if measured from the bridge at Newby Bridge[4], or 10.5 miles (16.9 km) if measured from Lakeside[citation needed]. The lake varies in width up to a maximum of 1630yd (1.49 km), and covers an area of 5.69 mi² (14.73 km²)[4]. With a maximum depth of 219 ft (67m) and an elevation above sea level of 128 ft (39m), the lowest point of the lake bed is well below sea level[4].

Windermere, Cumbria

The geological formations around the area take their name from the town. They are called the Windermere Group of sedimentary rocks. The town's name is also given to the Rt. Hon. Dr David Clark, Baron Clark of Windermere, who now lives in Windermere.
