Maryport

Maryport became a ghost town. The government declared West Cumberland a ?Special Area? but, by 1933, 57.3% of the town?s insured workforce was unemployed. 1,684 men were out of work. Maryport was for the most part, living on public funds[4]

Windermere

There is also another possible origin of the name Windermere. Winder is a common family name throughout England, but has many of its "roots" in Cumbria. There is Winder Hall in Lorton which dates back to the 11th Century. At one time a large part of the Lake District was called High Winder and Low Winder. Indeed the name Winder was a rich and well respected family name. Taking that into consideration it could be said that Windermere was taken from Winder (family name) & Mere which is a well known name for body of water, therefore Windermere could well mean Winder's Water?[citation needed][original research?] The earliest known name of Winder (Wynder) was recorded as Guy De Wynder who came to England along with William the Conqueror in 1066.

Belle Isle (Windermere)

The Roman governor at Ambleside built a villa on the island. It was also a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. It was known locally as the Great Island or Long Holme, but it was sold to Isabella Curwen in 1781 for £1,720 and was renamed after her.[3] The descendants of Isabella and her husband John Christian Curwen lived on the island until 1993.

Windermere, Cumbria

The geological formations around the area take their name from the town. They are called the Windermere Group of sedimentary rocks. The town's name is also given to the Rt. Hon. Dr David Clark, Baron Clark of Windermere, who now lives in Windermere.

Christie Park (stadium)

Christie Park had a capacity of approximately 6,400.[1] It comprised three covered stands and one uncovered stand. The only seated stand (the Main Stand) ran along the length of the pitch on one side. The main terraced end (the North Stand) was situated behind one of the goals, and was the location for the majority of the home fans on match days. The other covered stand (the Umbro Stand) was opposite the North Stand and was where away fans were placed during segregated matches. The capacity in this stand could be increased using temporary terracing, such as when Carlisle United visited on Boxing Day, 2004.
