Places of interest in Millom, LA18
The secondary school and sixth form college, for pupils from 11?19 years old, houses the adult education centre, swimming pool, an all weather sports pitch plus the newly opened "Melvyn Bragg Drama Studio". There are a number of other schools in the town including Millom Infants School, The Nursery, Black Combe Junior School and St James' Catholic School. The Millom Network Centre has recently been established, among its services is one for Adult Education.
The geological formations around the area take their name from the town. They are called the Windermere Group of sedimentary rocks. The town's name is also given to the Rt. Hon. Dr David Clark, Baron Clark of Windermere, who now lives in Windermere.
The Roman governor at Ambleside built a villa on the island. It was also a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. It was known locally as the Great Island or Long Holme, but it was sold to Isabella Curwen in 1781 for £1,720 and was renamed after her.[3] The descendants of Isabella and her husband John Christian Curwen lived on the island until 1993.
The north to south alignment of the lake, combined with its position between Morecambe Bay and the central fells, means that it forms what is essentially a migration highway. During winter months geese flying this route are a common sight.
Another commercial development by Helioslough called Buckshaw Link is scheduled for land west of Revolution Park. A number of warehouse and industrial units are planned with 4 acres (16,000 m2) of land set aside for a pub, hotel and car showroom.
