The station also has a signal box, the only one on the entire Manchester to Preston route. This has outlasted the others as it acts as the 'fringe' to both the Manchester Piccadilly signalling centre and Preston PSB. The train description system used in the Preston installation is incompatible with that installed at Piccadilly[3] so the signaller at Blackrod has to transfer train data manually from one system to the other as each one passes through his/her control area. A similar situation exists at Bromley Cross on the Bolton to Blackburn line, where the two control areas also overlap.[4]
The lead consultant/architect of the project was Lobb Sports, but the local firm of Bradshaw Gass & Hope acted as planning supervisors and quantity surveyors. The value of the contract was £25 million.[3] The stadium is noted for its distinct gabled architecture.
Three tutors were chosen initially: John Taylor, of Norwich, taught divinity; Mr. Holt, of Kirkdale, natural philosophy; and John Aikin, classics. Henry Willoughby, 13th Baron Willoughby of Parham, was the first president of the academy. Soon a fourth tutor was appointed. On the death of Dr. Taylor, in 1761, Aikin became tutor in divinity, and was succeeded in his old duties by Joseph Priestley. Among the other tutors who at some point joined the staff of the academy were Reinhold Forster, William Enfield, George Walker, Dr. Nicholas Clayton, and Gilbert Wakefield.
The stadium was boought by Tesco and was notable for bucking the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium. There are 4 stands in the stadium - Halliwell Jones North Stand (reserved seating), Martin Dawes East Stand (reserved seating), South Stand (home terracing), Doodson West Stand (visitors' terracing). It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m.
From northwards clockwise, it borders the parishes of Croft (at a point on a motorway junction), Birchwood, Woolston, the unparished area of Warrington, then the parish of Winwick.
