Most Rossendalians consider themselves to live in 'The Valley' and this is still locally a commonly used term to describe the district.[citation needed]
Darwen has a brass band, named 'Darwen Brass'.[11] The band, under MD Steve Hartley, won four consecutive first place prizes in NWCBBA (North West Counties Brass Band Association) contests in the 2009/10 season. [12] The contest successes were in Fleeetwood, St. Helens, Preston and Tameside (competing within the 4th section). Following this success the band was promoted to the 3rd section for the 2010/11 season and finished third at the Fleetwood contest. The band has also been successful in various other contests such as the Whit Friday brass band competitions.[citation needed]
The tower was closed to the public in October 2000 due to investigations that the tower was unsafe to the public, it was also noted in a spring 2001 survey that the structure had severe decay in the stone decking. The refurbishment was supposed to take 2-3 months to complete but many delays like the foot and mouth crisis which was present at the time kept cropping up. The tower was finally re-opened on 9 April 2002.
