Lilford

Lilford is a district in the town of Leigh, Greater Manchester.

Wigan

In the 1830s Wigan became one of the first towns in Britain to be served by a railway; the line had connections to Preston and the Manchester and Liverpool Railway.[24] Wigan began to dominate as a cotton town in the late 19th century, and this lasted until the mid-20th century.[24] In 1911 the town was described as an "industrial town ... occupying the greater part of the township, whilst its collieries, factories ... fill the atmosphere with smoke".[8] After the Second World War there was a boom followed by a slump from which Wigan's textile industry did not recover. While the town's cotton and coal industries declined in the 20th century, the engineering industry did not go into recession.[24] The last working cotton mill, May Mill, closed in 1980.[25]

Wigan North Western railway station

It is a moderately-sized station on the West Coast Main Line. It is operated by Virgin Trains, and is also served by Northern Rail. London Midland used to offer a daily service to Preston during the evening rush hour on weekdays which called here, but this was withdrawn at the end of the 2007-8 timetable.

Wigan Wallgate railway station

The apparent sharp increase in usage 2006/7 (right) is in fact due to a change in the way passengers to and from "Wigan Stations" were allocated between Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western. The recent apparent decline is again due to the Strategic Rail Authority's constant attempts to allocate grouped stations' passengers accurately.

Radcliffe Power Station

The station was opened on 9 October 1905 by the Earl of Derby.[1] It generated electricity using two 1.5 megawatt (MW) turbo generating sets made by British Thomson-Houston. Radcliffe Power Station was the first power station in the UK to transmit power by bare electrical conductors at 10 kilovolts (kV).[2] The station was fed coal by the nearby East Lancashire Railway line.
