Preston (pronounced /ˈprɛstən/ ) is a city and non-metropolitan district in Lancashire, England. It is located on the north bank of the River Ribble, and was granted city status in 2002, becoming England\'s 50th city in the 50th year of Queen Elizabeth II\'s reign.Preston has a population of 131,900, and lies at the centre of the wider Preston sub-area, which has a population of 184,836, and the Central Lancashire sub-region, with a population of 335,000.
The relationship between Farington and Leyland has always been strong but Farington is not part of Leyland. Stanifield Lane which runs through the village and into Leyland is the main thoroughfare for shoppers and commuters alike. There is a Catholic convent in Farington, serving a moderately large Catholic population.[citation needed] Farington has a park that has been referred to as the home of football in South Ribble.[citation needed]
The transport strategy also incorporates sustainable principles with cycle lanes and public transport included in the masterplan. Improvements to the neighbouring M6 and M61 junctions have also been made[3]. Public transport is also catered for by the new Buckshaw Village railway station that will be built.
On the outskirts of the town of Wigan, Greater Manchester, the semi-rural Gathurst is a recently refurbished two-platform station on the Southport line 5 km (2¾ miles) north west of Wigan Wallgate station. The station also serves the nearby village of Shevington, indeed until 1973 (see British Rail Timetable of 1972) was named Gathurst for Shevington.
Its pupils number around 900, aged 11?16. The schools performs well in league tables compared with other local schools.Staff have a strict and unbreakable uniform policy taking pride in the students positive and coprative reaction to this.
