Preston (pronounced /ˈprɛstən/ ) is a city and non-metropolitan district in Lancashire, England. It is located on the north bank of the River Ribble, and was granted city status in 2002, becoming England\'s 50th city in the 50th year of Queen Elizabeth II\'s reign.Preston has a population of 131,900, and lies at the centre of the wider Preston sub-area, which has a population of 184,836, and the Central Lancashire sub-region, with a population of 335,000.
The Face of Wigan, located in the town centre since 2008, is a stainless steel sculpture of a face. Created by sculptor Rick Kirby, The Face stands 5.5 m (18 ft) tall and cost £80,000.[84]
Wigan's other main station is Wigan North Western, which is about 100 metres/yards away, on the opposite side of the street named Wallgate. [1]
Wigan could have another direct link to Glasgow as Glasgow Trains would run the new Liverpool-Glasgow service, running two trains a day calling only at Preston and Carlisle. According to Glasgow Trains outline proposals these services would be operated by carriages hauled by Class 67 locomotives. Under HS2 and Government proposals High Speed trains would stop here from Glasgow before joining the new HS2 line to Birmingham and London.
Blackrod was once the junction for a short branch to serve the original Horwich station (closed to passengers in 1965) and Horwich Locomotive Works (sold in 1988, after which the line was closed and lifted). Until the 1980s, Blackrod had a poor frequency of service,[2] but for many years it has been a popular commuter station.
