Formerly a township in the parish of Eastham in the Wirral Hundred, Little Sutton became part of Ellesmere Port civil parish in 1950. The population was 166 in 1801, 432 in 1851 and 1,109 in 1901.[1]
Great Sutton is a residential area in close proximity to the A41 road that links Birkenhead and Chester. Dating back to about 1850 is the 'White Swan Inn' public house. Consecrated in November 1879, the Church of St John the Evangelist is located on Chester Road (A41).[3]
Ellesmere Port is a large industrial town and port in the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It is situated on the south border of the Wirral Peninsula on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal, which in turn gives access to the River Mersey, and to the north of the city of Chester. The town had a population of 64,100 as of the 2001 Census.
These new developments caused local concern as the physicality and therefore the feel of the city was being dramatically altered. In 1968, a report by Donald Insall[21] in collaboration with authorities and government recommended that historic buildings be preserved in Chester. Consequently, the buildings were used in new and different ways instead of being flattened.[22]
The Countess of Chester is the main NHS hospital for the Chester area with 625 beds. It was officially opened as such on 30th May, 1984, but the accident and emergency wards were open from 1983, and a hospital has existed on site since 1829. Initially it was a mental health unit, called the 'Lunatic Asylum Building'. The building's name continually changed during the 19th and early 20th centuries from Cheshire Lunatic Asylum, to Chester County Lunatic Asylum, County Mental Hospital, Upton Mental Hospital, Deva Hospital and finally West Cheshire Hospital.
