In football, the IFA Championship side Bangor FC plays at Clandeboye Park on Clandeboye Road. There is a large number of amateur league football teams within the Bangor area playing in the Northern Amateur Football League. In fact, in the early rounds of the Steel & Sons Cup, one of the premier knock-out cup competitions for Intermediate football sides in Northern Ireland, there were no less than 5 teams with Bangor in their name; the other teams besides Bangor FC were Bangor Amateurs, Bangor Rangers, Bangor Swifts and 1st. Bangor.
Newry Urban District Council was unusual in that during the period from the 1920s to the 1960s it was one of only a handful of councils in Northern Ireland which had a majority of councillors from the Catholic/Nationalist community. (The others were Strabane UDC and a handful of rural district councils.) The reason according to Michael Farrell was that this community formed such a large majority in the town, around 80% of the population, that it was impossible to gerrymander. Also an oddity was that for a time it was controlled by the Irish Labour Party, after the left wing of the Northern Ireland Labour Party defected to them in the 1940s.[13]
Dromore (from Irish: Droim Mór meaning "large ridge")[1] is a small market town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies 19 miles south-west of Belfast, on the A1 Belfast to Dublin road. It had a population of 4,968 people in the 2001 Census and is in the Banbridge District Council area.
