The modern village has a population of about 800 people and is separated into a number of neighborhoods including Kirkton, Ichrachan, Airds and Hafton.[3] There are two council schemes, Cruachan Cottages and Achlonan. The main A85 road skirts around to the south of the village, so passing motorists only catch a glimpse of the village. Taynuilt Golf Club lies immediately to the northwest of the village and enjoys scenic views over Airds Bay.[4]Taynuilt Shinty Club plays in the village. Other amenities of village like include a town centre with shops, a hairdresser, the Robins Nest Tearoom, a post office, a doctor's office with a pharmacy, and a toy shop.
It was one of the sons of the Ross family who built the Castle and adopted the name Fairlie. The family continued to live in the Castle until the 17th century, but by the end of the 19th century the castle was in ruins (the Castle has been sold in 1999 to be converted into a dwelling). It has many similarities to Law Castle, Little Cumbrae Castle, and the tower of Skelmorlie Castle.
The West End is also host to 'Glenpark': home of the 2002 SNCL champions, Greenock Cricket Club. The ground has been credited as one of the most pleasant to play at in the country, and has a slight slope from the East to West end of the field. The club also operates Junior and Lower-league teams under the Greenock or Glenpark XI name, and has full clubhouse facilities.
Greenock's main shopping throughfare was Hamilton Street, which connected West Blackhall Street in the west to Clyde Square in the east. In 1975 it disappeared along with several other streets as the area was pedestrianised as Hamilton Way. In the 1990s it was refurbished again, and The Oak Mall indoor shopping centre now forms the central feature of the town, and provides most of the major retail shops in Inverclyde, with approximately 85 units, with main anchor stores including Marks and Spencer, Boots, Primark and a newly opened New Look store. Marks and Spencer is in its original building (dating from 1936) which was simply built round during the first phase of pedestrianisation.[9] In addition, two major supermarkets Tesco and Morrisons are sited near the mall. A retail estate is located nearby, in front of the Waterfront swimming pool and leisure centre, and the streets around the mall provide a large number of smaller shops. Small groups of shops in most of the areas of the town provide for day to day needs, but most of the specialist shops are in the town centre. The town contains one diplomatic mission, an Italian consulate.
Stewarton's cricket club had its ground located between Lochridge and Ward Park house.
