Latheron Scottish Gaelic: Latharan) is a small village in Caithness, in the Highland area of Scotland, centred on the junction of the A9 with the A99. The village is within the Parish of Latheron.
It was built on the land of one Captain Dunbar (who had actually wished for it to be called Janetston, after his wife). It was a planned settlement, begun in 1835 with the building of a hotel (then known as 'Dunbar?s Hotel' but today as 'The Blends' - due to its proprietor in the 1890s penchant for blending whisky from stills of dubious legality). In the beginning, tenants of the settlement were allocated 2 acres (8,100 m2) and the right to fish from the harbour.
The constituency was a district of burghs known also as Tain Burghs until 1832, and then as Wick Burghs. It was represented by one Member of Parliament. In 1918 the constituency was abolished and the Tain component was merged into Ross and Cromarty.
The town is within the Parish of Thurso, with the parishes of Olrig and Bower to the east, Halkirk to the south, and Reay to the west. The parish of Thurso also has a north-facing Atlantic coastline stretching from Crosskirk Bay in the west to the Haven in Dunnet Bay in the east.
Much of the district was built up during the latter half of the 20th century, and this development began in the region of the bridge which carries the A9 road over Wolf Burn, at grid reference ND106691. A belt of agricultural land still separates the district from central Thurso.
