The station was staffed during peak hours until approximately 1990, after which the hut which served as a ticket office was demolished. As of 2009, the old concrete shelters have been replaced with reinforced plastic shelters which are now the only features on the platforms. Ramps lead down to street level.
Hove railway station opened on 1 October 1865, the present station was originally named Cliftonville, then West Brighton, before being renamed Hove and West Brighton in 1894 and finally Hove in 1895.
Hove has two railway stations. Hove railway station has access to the Brighton main line and on to London without the need to go through Brighton. It is also on the West Coastway Line, as is Hove's other station, Aldrington. Additionally, there was briefly a "halt" between Hove and Brighton, at Holland Road. Direct train journeys to London take just over an hour, and to Brighton, a few minutes.
There is a shingle beach with good stretches of clean sand at low water. South of the coast road is Widewater, an internationally rare brackish lagoon, and the only known location of the probably extinct Ivell's sea anemone. Immediately north of the developed area is Lancing Ring, a Nature Reserve, part of the former Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the newly established South Downs National Park. To the north of that is farmed agricultural downland connected to Lancing College Farm. On its eastern side is Shoreham Airport, the world's oldest continually-operational airport which also served as an RAF base during World War II.
