Gurnard, Isle of Wight

A fortification known as Gurnard Fort was built on a headland west of Gurnard Marsh about 1600. The land was eroded, however, and all traces disappeared until an archaeological excavation of a Roman villa in 1864 uncovered traces of Gurnard Fort as well.[2]

Mill Hill (Isle of Wight) railway station

Mill Hill Railway Station was first seen as the down train from Cowes emerged from the 208 yard tunnel along the curving platform[1], the sweep still visible in 2005 [2] on a small area of grass where the demolished station[3] once stood [4]. Unlike many Island railway stations Mill Hill was busy at the beginning and end of each working day, depositing and picking up hundreds of workmen from shipyards [5] . Conversely, after passenger closure in 1966 a single employee spent six months on duty at the crossing just past the station with not one chance to open it[6].

Cowes

Cowes, sometimes referred to as West Cowes, is an English seaport town and civil parish[2] on the Isle of Wight, an island south of Southampton. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east Bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry.

Quarr Abbey

The monks wasted no time in beginning their transfer from Solesmes to the Isle of Wight and, on Saturday 21 September 1901, practically the entire community of Solesmes reached Appuldurcombe.

Fort Gilkicker

Fort Gilkicker is a Royal Commission fort situated at the eastern end of Stokes Bay, Gosport, Hampshire to dominate the key anchorage of Spithead. Built between 1863 and 1871 as a semi-circular arc with 22 casemates, to be armed with 5 12" guns, 17 10" guns and 5 9" guns. The actual installed armament rather differed from this. In 1902 the RML guns were replaced by 2 9.2" and 2 6" BL guns.
