Quarr AbbeyOne of the monks, Dom Paul Bellot, aged 31, was an architect. He designed and draughted plans for the new abbey, incorporating and extending Quarr Abbey House, some distance from the ruins of the medieval monastery. 300 workers from the Isle of Wight, accustomed to building only dwelling-houses, raised a building whose design and workmanship is admired by all who visit the Abbey. The building of the refectory and three sides of the cloister began in 1907 and was completed inside one year. The rest of the monks came from Appuldurcombe and, in April 1911, work began on the Abbey church which was quickly completed and consecrated on 12 October 1912. It was built with tall pointed towers of glowing Flemish brick, adding a touch of Byzantium to the skyline.Stenbury DownStenbury Down is a chalk down on the Isle of Wight. It is located close to the town of Ventnor, in the southeast of the island, and rises to 226 metres at its highest point, west of Wroxall, Isle of Wight. It has an obelisk to the Worsley family, partially demolished by a lightning strike and two prominent radio masts. The northern end terminates in the Gat Cliff.St Lawrence, Isle of WightSt Lawrence was in the nineteenth century the subject of an ambitious plan by a German developer, named William Spindler (who had made his fortune as a chemist in Berlin), to develop St Lawrence as a resort to rival Ventnor. He lived on the Isle of Wight from 1881 to his death in 1889 and is buried in Whitwell. During his time in St. Lawrence he had an enormous influence there and on the surrounding areas. He possibly alienated local opinion with a series of "improving pamphlets" criticising local perceived laziness. His legacy has been a number of grand Victorian houses, often semi-derelict and half hidden by woodland. Perhaps his most noticeable memorials are several huge pieces of masonry in Binnel Bay, which once formed a harbour which is all but inaccessible from the land. These have fallen into titanic ruins and are known locally as "Spindler's Follies".[1]Wroxall railway stationReasonably busy with commuter traffic all the year round[3] it was originally built with a single siding, goods traffic diminished rapidly with the advent of the motor bus.[4] The Station Hotel was situated on the Up Platform and was converted into housing after the station closed.[5] Next to this was a single storey station, now demolished[6]. On the down side was a small shelter.[7] The station was lit by gas up until its closure.Bedhampton railway stationGrateley · Andover · Whitchurch · Overton · Basingstoke · Hook · Winchfield · Fleet · Farnborough (Main)Information by Wikipedia.com
