The school's headteacher has announced that in 2009, Chatham House will become a federation with Clarendon School, and that years 7,8, and 9 will remain unmixed at both schools, but then from year 10 onwards, the schools will mix pupils regardless of gender. Alongside this, the school's current science department (the "Redman Wing") will be demolished, and the currently new extension to the redman wing will be developed into a multi-story building. It is currently undecided whether Clarendon will be re-built onsite of Chatham House's grounds, but development at both schools will take place nonetheless. It is also unsure whether Chatham House will keep the same houses.
In the winter of 1915-1916, these early aircraft began to use the open farmlands at Manston as a site for emergency landings. Thus was established the Admiralty Aerodrome at Manston. Not long after, the training school, set up originally to instruct pilots in the use of the new Handley Page bombers, was established; so by the close of 1916 there were already two distinct units stationed at Manston: the Operational War Flight Command and the Handley Page Training School.
Since it was first built, Deal Castle has had a Captain. Until the early 18th century, the captain commanded the garrison. However, since that time the title has become purely honorary.
Over the years successive Wardens converted the fort and its grounds into a comfortable country house and gardens. Resident Wardens included William Pitt the Younger (whose niece Lady Hester Stanhope initiated the castle's gardens, using labour from the local militia), the Duke of Wellington (who died here), Sir Winston Churchill and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Memorabilia from these past Wardens, including two rooms dedicated to the Duke of Wellington, can be viewed at the castle.
Although now some distance from the sea, Richborough stood at the southern end of the Wantsum Channel from prehistory to the early mediaeval period. The channel provided a safe searoute from the continent to the Thames estuary and separated the island of Thanet from the mainland.
