Twickenham is often referred to as the home of English rugby.[3] The stadium is owned and operated by the RFU, so Twickenham is the host of numerous rugby union fixtures year round. Most prominently it is the home of the English rugby union team, who have played nearly all their home games at the stadium (as opposed to some of the other rugby nations that may have a home stadium, but use numerous venues, England uses just Twickenham). Twickenham hosts England's Six Nations matches, as well as inbound touring teams from the Southern Hemisphere, usually annually around November.
In 1963, the Quins acquired an athletics ground with 14 acres (57,000 mē) just across the road from the RFU ground, which became the Harlequin training pitch. The ground was named Stoop Memorial Ground after Adrian Stoop, a former England international and longtime Harlequins player and president but is generally known as "The Stoop" with even the Harlequins' official website frequently using the informal name.
Since the borough was formed it has been controlled by the Labour Party on all but two occasions. In 1968 the Conservatives formed a majority for the first and last time to date until they lost control to Labour in 1971. Labour subsequently lost control of the council in the 2006 local elections which produced a hung result. Although Labour was the largest party on the Council the Conservatives were able to form a coalition with councillors from the independent Isleworth Community Group (ICG). This lasted until the 2010 local elections when all the independent councillors lost their seats. Labour won control of the Council with 35 seats while the Conservatives now have 25. No other parties are currently represented on the Council.[2]
