The original station building was located approximately 170m south of the existing station and was accessed from South Hill Avenue. It is similar to the building still in use at North Ealing and remains, adjacent to the eastbound platform, in the car park on the north side of the tracks. On 5 July 1935, a new station was opened accessed from Northolt Road.[2] The new station building was designed by Charles Holden as a graduated structure stepping up on each side to the platforms of the high level tracks. The brick walls and bands of horizontal glazing are capped with a series of flat concrete slab roofs.

Prior to the early 20th century West Harrow was overwhelmingly rural. The construction of the Uxbridge extension to the Metropolitan Line in 1904, and specifically the new West Harrow tube station, triggered a steady growth of homes in the area, spreading out from the location of the new station. The remaining open pockets of West Harrow were filled with small council and retirement estates in the second half of the 20th century.
The ticket office at Surbiton is open seven days a week, unlike some stations, and so commuters from surrounding areas go to the station to buy and renew tickets.
The most famous shop in Kingston is Bentalls, started by Frank Bentall in 1867 in Clarence Street, where it (or at least the completely rebuilt) Bentalls Centre stands to this day.
