0.8 miles (1.3 km) south of the village, beside the main Witney - Burford road (now part of the A40 trunk road) is a 7th century Saxon barrow that contained the cremated remains of a man. Objects from the barrow are now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
The Church of England parish church of Saint Britius is Norman. The south doorway with its decorative tympanum, a doorway in the south wall of the chancel and the font date from this time.[3] The porch is in the Transitional style from Norman to Early English Gothic,[3] which suggests that it was added slightly later. Early in the 13th century the north aisle was added, with an Early English style arcade of four arches linking it with the nave.[4] In the second half of the 13th century the bell tower was added at the west end of the north aisle and the present east window of three lancets was inserted in the chancel.[4] A chapel forms an eastward continuation of the north aisle.[4] Two of its windows are original 13th century lancets; two square-headed windows were added in the 14th century and the east window of the chapel is modern.[4] The Gothic Revival architect G.E. Street restored the building in 1868.[4] The tower has a peal of six bells, but they are not currently ringable.
Hungerford is on the River Dun in the Kennet Valley at grid reference SU337685. It is the westernmost town in Berkshire, situated on the border with Wiltshire, and lies within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The highest point in the entire South East England region is the 297 m (974 ft) summit of Walbury Hill, situated only 4 miles (7 km) from the town. The Kennet separates Hungerford from what might be described as the town's only suburb, the small hamlet of Eddington.
Kidderminster is an unparished area within Wyre Forest District, but Charter Trustees maintain the traditions of the town and elect a Mayor. The Wyre Forest District Council is currently run by a Conservative Party group, who hold 23 of the council's 42 seats.[6] In addition there are eight Kidderminster Health Concern Councillors on the council. The area (initially as Kidderminster, then after 1983 as the Wyre Forest constituency) has been represented by Conservative MPs Gerald Nabarro 1950?63, Sir Tatton Brinton 1964?74, Esmond Bulmer 1974?87, Anthony Coombs 1987?97, and Labour MP David Lock 1997?2001. In the United Kingdom general election, 2001, the town returned Dr Richard Taylor as an independent MP for the Wyre Forest parliamentary constituency. Taylor had fought the election to protest against the proposed reduction in services at Kidderminster Hospital. He held his seat at the 2005 election, the first independent MP to do so since 1949.[7] In the May 2010 General Election Taylor lost to Conservative candidate Mark Garnier.
