Haytor Granite Tramway

Once off the moor the place to see the track at its best is a small section of the tramway running through Yarner woods, there is also a well-made five mile (8 km) marker stone. The granite track sections can be followed through the woods before the pathway diverts back onto the main Bovey Tracey road. The tramway cuts across fields down to the road which runs beside the Edgemoor Hotel and a few track setts lie scattered on the lawn of this hotel, but no clear line of the track can be distinguished. Chapple Bridge was the only bridge on the tramway, crossing the Bovey leat, until the opening of the second quarry at Holwell Tor. Ventiford Cottages were built to house employees who worked on the tramway and canal, although some lived in a collection of small houses clustered around the inn which lay below Haytor Rocks.[2] Stables were also maintained here for the horses that worked the canal and the railway. Granite setts can clearly be seen in the construction of bridges on the route of the Templer Waybridge.

Kingsteignton

Founded in the early 8th century by the kings of Wessex as the centre of a vast Saxon estate that extended fromTeignmouth to Manaton, Kingsteignton was a key settlement in Saxon times and gave its name to the saxon hundred of Teignton. The hundred moot or court was held in the village but it appears that by the time of the Domesday Survey the name of the hundred had been changed to Teignbridge, possibly indicating that the site of the court had been moved. As a royal vill Kingsteignton provided rich pickings for Danish raiders who plundered it in 1001.

Newton Abbot

Newton Abbot has a racecourse nearby situated in the parishes of Kingsteignton and Teigngrace and has one country park, Decoy. Newton Abbot's holds the historic Cheese and Onion Fayre, originally held from the 5th to 7 November in honour of Saint Leonard, but now celebrated at the beginning of September. The town grew very rapidly in the Victorian era as it was home to the South Devon Railway locomotive works. This later became a major steam engine shed and was retained to service British Railways diesel locomotives, although it has now closed and is the site of an industrial estate.

Newton Abbot Racecourse

The racecourse holds monthly car boot sales and regular antiques fairs. Ladies Day is held in June and there are a series of evening races. In the 1970s and 80's there was greyhound racing at the racecourse in the evenings, following the closure of the track in Kingskerswell. No totalisator was operated, but there were a few trackside bookmakers.

Plainmoor

In the not too distant past there was some talk of re-location, and although this is not completely out of the question, Mike Bateson believed that would only happen if:
