Exminster is a village situated on the southern edge of the City of Exeter on the western side of the Exeter ship canal and River Exe in the county of Devon, England. It is around 6 km (3 miles) south of the centre of Exeter, and has a population of 3,084 (census 2001). The rare Cirl Bunting can be found here.[1] Exminster Marshes, to the east of the village, are a major site for birds, especially migratory ones.[2]
The course was first established in 1866 when the 91-acre (370,000 m2) site was purchased. The main grandstand was built in 1969 and opened by the Queen Mother, while the corporate facilities were opened in 1990. Newton Abbot is a unique track in the UK as there are clear views of the entire course.[citation needed]
In 1509 the Manor of Kingsteignton, which had been a crown demesne until the 13th century, passed into the hands of the Clifford family who held the title of Lord of the Manor until 1589 when it was passed into the hands of the infamous Farleigh bloodline who hold it to this day.
