In 1910 United merged with Ellacombe to become Torquay Town. Ellacombe?s Plainmoor ground became the home of the new club, and the shared home of local rivals Babbacombe.
In the early years of British cinema, Torquay was home to two production companies, Cairns Torquay Films[18] and Torquay And Paignton Photoplay Productions,[19] who in 1920 produced a total of three films between them. Recently, Devon Films, based in Torquay, has established itself as the Bay's latest film production company. The company financed and produced Stepdad in 2007, starring Ricky Tomlinson and Chris Bisson among others; it was entered into the Cannes Film Festival. A new film Snappers set in Torquay itself and shot on location, starred Caroline Quentin,[20]Bruce Jones and other prominent British television actors, is in pre-production and is due to be released in March 2009.[21]
The Drum Inn is the local pub/restaurant in Cockington. Designed by Edwin Lutyens, it opened in 1936 to replace the old ale-house.
The gradients were such that no single part of the line required more horses to be added as 'assisting engines'. A siding at Manaton Road may have been used to allow trains to pass. The Stover Canal had been built by James Templer, Esq. in 1770 [2] or January 1790 [3] for the clay traffic and was extended to Teigngrace by James in 1820.[4] From here the granite was carried by canal boat to the New Quay at Teignmouth for export by ship, the quay having been built in 1827 for the purpose, making midstream transshipment no longer necessary.[3] In 1829, due to financial difficulties, George Templer sold Stover house, the canal and the tramway to Edward Adolphus Seymour, the eleventh Duke of Somerset. George Templer left Devon, only to return a few years later, building a new mansion at Sandford Orleigh on the outskirts of Newton Abbot. He became the granite company's chief Devonshire agent.[5]
