West Parley is a village and civil parish in south east Dorset, England, situated on the River Stour between Bournemouth and Ferndown. The village has a population of 3,532 (As of 2001[update]).
Ferndown is the largest inland town in Dorset in terms of population.
West Moors has a mixed population, with a relatively high proportion of elderly people, and significant number of young families. There are two first schools, one middle school, two youth clubs and a skatepark.
Every summer in June the town holds the Wimborne Folk Festival.[10] Founded in 1980, the annual event of Traditional Folk Dance and Song has become the focal point for the largest gathering of dance teams and musicians in the South of England. The festival is considered by many to be the town's major event of the year and is highly regarded nationally as one of the largest events of its kind in the country.[11] The festival involves Morris Dancing. The regional festival is attended by over 15,000 people across its weekend with parts of the town being closed to traffic.
Sixty six years later in 1562 a grant was obtained from Queen Elizabeth I by which part of the property formerly belonging to the college, together with all ecclesiastical rights and prerogatives was returned to Wimborne and vested in twelve governors. The charter was surrendered to James I and a new charter was obtained from Charles I at a cost of £1000 with the addition of an organist and singing men. During the English Civil War, when Charles I was beheaded his coat of arms was painted out from the wall of the minster, but on the restoration of Charles II the arms were speedily replaced and have now been restored.
