The LSWR's station (later known as Chard Town) opened in 1860 with a single platform, and the B&ER's (variously known as Chard Joint or Chard Central) in 1866. For five years LSWR trains continued to call at Chard Town and then reversed to the connecting line and then resumed their forward journey to the Joint station. In 1871 a new platform was opened on the connecting line; this closed to passengers on 1 January 1917 but the town station was the main goods depot for the town until it finally closed on 18 April 1966. Passenger trains ceased to operate to Chard Central on 11 September 1962, and private goods traffic on 3 October 1966. The station building and train shed still stand and are in use by engineering companies.[33]
Woolhayes Farm (grid reference ST315109) is a 13.2 hectare (32.5 acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Combe St Nicholas in Somerset, notified in 1992.
The Police Training College (known as CENTREX) closed for the training of new recruits from April 2006. On August 6th, 2008, Prisons Minister David Hanson announced a shortlist of four possible locations for a new Prison in Wales.[1] The CENTREX site was a candidate, but there were strong protests.[2]. In February 2009 it was announced that the new prison would be located in Caernarfon, however as from September 2009, plans for this prison have also been abandoned.[3]
Historically the area was dominated by heavy industry, revolving around the local coal and iron industries. Today the industrial landscape has completely changed, and is completely based upon light industry represented around the village in neighbouring industrial estates; Avondale Park, Forge Hammer & Springvale.
